Unless your head has been buried in the proverbial sand of doing your job at work, spending time with your family, or pursuing meaningful recreation/hobbies, you’ve noticed that BYU football currently has the longest streak of being involved in conference realignment talks without anything actually happening. Ever. If this is news to you, you need to get yourself to a subscription fan discussion board ASAP*.
The latest scoops are saying that the Big 12 is once again making the mathematically incongruent considerations of expanding to 12 schools, meaning that there is 1 spot to fill once West Virginia joins the league.
Many bloggers and journalists are reporting Louisville and BYU to be targets, while others are claiming on Twitter that Florida State and Clemson could both be brought in to occupy 1 membership unit in the Big 12.
“Sources”, which are very close to the “situation”, tell Madman In The Attic** that the next move could be even bigger. The conference appears to be on the verge of retroactively extending a membership invite to BYU, which would date back to 1993. BYU, recently coming off a Heisman Trophy-winning year in 1990, seems to be a perfect fit. Parts of the invitation include tier 3 media rights, a no-Sunday-play guarantee and a share of the 1996 Big 12 football championship. Discussion have included converting some of BYU’s 5 consecutive Las Vegas Bowl appearances into a mixture of Alamo Bowl, Insight Bowl, and Meineke Car Care Bowl appearance, but Madman In The Attic has not been able to conclude whether that will be part of the final contract.
My “sources” tell me that many athletic directors see this reconstruction of the past as the fastest way to overcome a turbulent present. Stay tuned, as this could be an unprecedented move that could really shake up the future (?) of college football as we know it.

A BYU fan talking about BYU football in the 90s as if it’s still relevant? Unheard of.
Yeah, it’s kind of a new thing. Kind of like Ute fans talking about national championships (consensus #1 rankings) and Heisman Trophies as if they’re irrelevant. We’ll see how long these trends last.
I do love the possible changing of the past. It does hold great new things for the upcoming seasons.
